Hugh Diffey – There Is No. EP (2021)

Independent prog artist Hugh Diffey has released their first EP this year. The EP, There is No. EP, is solely instrumental and it is a blend of progressive elements and a dark, ambient soundscape. The EP consists of five tracks, which transition between each other by an ambient noise bridge, follow a common musical theme and tone that establishes a gloomy feeling throughout. Tone-wise, the bass is relatively upfront and audible, which gives the EP its own characteristic sound, also contributing to the dark atmosphere aforementioned. The intermittently changing instrumentation was successfully embellished into the general structures of the songs, serving as a progressive element.

The second half of “There is No.” and the first half of “The Duck Pond” can be highlighted as prime examples where this sound is well-implemented. Generally speaking, It is safe to say that the artist seems to understand elements of progressive music, and can execute them in their own work. This EP is not the next prog masterpiece, but it definitely is a successful first project for an emerging artist, and surely an EP to check out if you are looking for something that is ambient, heavy yet somehow still easy on the ears.
